I spent last week away from the clinic at The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dentistry in Miami to hone my skills working toward excellence in dentistry.

In today's world dentists are under increasing pressure due to competition, rising costs and insurance companies covering less. It would be easy sometimes to forget why you went into a health profession like dentistry.

The Pankey Institute course last week was an excellent reminder to me of why I went into dentistry: so that I could build relationships with my patients and with my expertise in oral health guide them towards decisions to help maintain oral health and help them keep their healthy teeth for a lifetime. This approach supports the preventative dentistry idea that I subscribe to that the best thing I can do for your teeth is nothing.

As Dr LD Pankey, the founder of the Pankey Institute, once said 'Professionalism is that quality of conduct which accompanies the use of superior knowledge, skill and judgement toward the benefit of another person or society prior to any consideration of self interest.'
